Our trip to Madeira Island, Portugal was from the 8 - 29 of November last year. We stayed in Canico about 15 kilometres from Funchal.

We had two weeks at Quinta Splendida hotel and one week at Roca Mar hotel booked through RCI with the kind help of Christina Coward, Aviawest Owner Liaison. She assisted not only with the booking, but also in utilizing points for airfare to and from Madeira.

The arrangements were made in June 2007. Our trip to and from Madeira in November 2007, went smoothly with almost no problems.

I had the misfortunate to fall and fracture my hip, requiring a total hip replacement. The staff at Quinta Splendida were most helpful, assisting in obtaining medical referral and providing courtesy transport to Funchal, where surgery was carried out the next day.

Medical care was excellent and of a high standard. There were no complication following surgery and the return trip home to Victoria went smoothly with great help from the TAP Portugal and Alaska Airlines.

I would encourage all travellers to ensure they have international medical travel insurance and to have the international telephone and fax contact numbers readily close at hand.

We contacted our insurance provider immediately and everything went smoothly with the bill being paid by them before we left Madeira.
