New South Wales
August, 2008

From the Sydney Opera House to the Blue Mountains, New South Wales is a long way from its namesake in the United Kingdom.

Australia's capital region is commonly referred to with is abbreviation, NSW. While the world-famous coastal city Syndey is the state capital, NSW is also home to the national capital, Canberra.

While the state of NSW receives over 34% of total visitors to Australia, tourism employs only 6% of their workforce. The diversity of lifestyle and activities is enormous as Australia's oldest and most populous state continues to grow.

Food & Wine

Australia's world-renowned reputation for fine wines makes winery and vineyard tours a high priority for many visitors to NSW, specifically Hunter Valley.

Approximately 13% of international visitors to NSW - as of the summer of 2006 - visited a winery. Wine tastings and pairings with cheeses, jams, sauces and/or olives are right up there in popularity too.

As many tourism professionals are knowledgeable about vineyards and wine in their area, ask around during your stay for recommendations on where to visit and what to taste.

Climate

Weather varies through the state as coastal, urban, mountain and rural terrain provide diverse microclimates. Heavy anual rainfall stays very close to the coast, while precipitation decreases dramatically as you travel westward into the mainland. Average temperatures range from 6°C in mountain areas to 15°C in coastal and northwestern lands.

Visitors to NSW can choose shopping and city life or hiking and rural adventure - or even combine both - but everyone will be sure to find warm hospitality and a laid back lifestyle.
