The Great Wall of China - in Chinese called literally 'long wall' - was constructed mostly between the 5th and 16th centuries. The world's longest structure, it has been rebuilt and maintained for thousands of years, often supplied by local resources.

Also known as 'The Lost City of the Incas', this mountain ruin site is the most iconic remnant of the Inca empire. Machu Picchu is northwest of Cusco and was built around the mid 13th century. The city consists of 140 structures including temples, sanctuaries, parks and residences.
A zig-zag road of hairpin turns called the Hiram Bingham Highway transports tourists up to the site, but hardier travellers can hike the Inca Trail over 2 - 4 days.

Generally regarded as one of the greatest Roman architectural achievements, the Colosseum was built in the latter part of the 1st century. The best preserved section reaches three stories of arches and half columns.
While earlier amphitheatres were built into hillsides, the Colosseum is a freestanding elliptical building.Seating was highly structured and organized according to class and occupation.

Halfway between the cities of Amman and Aqaba on the slope of Mount Hor, the ruin city of Petra consists of several carved buildings including the Treasury, a monastery and an amphitheatre.
No archeological or historical evidence has conclusively dated the founding of Petra, although it seems to have thrived during the New Testament era.

Part of a larger city of ruins, the pyramid at Chichén Itzá is also known as the Temple of Kukulcan or El Castillo, 'the castle'. Named for the Mayan king who commissioned it, the pyramid casts a fascinating serpent shadow on the spring and fall equinoxes in tribute to the king.
Other major structures at the site include the Great Ballcourt, the Templo de los Guerreros or 'Temple of the Warriors', the High Priest's Temple, the El Caracol observatory and Las Monjas or 'The Nunnery'.

El Castillo at Chichén Itzá

Built in the seventeenth century, the Taj Mahal is a mausoleum that combines elements from Persian, Turkish, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles. It was built by emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial to his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
The Taj Mahal's distinctive white domes are made of marble and stand as a universally recognized and admired architectural achievement. The Chahar Bagh gardens surround the building.

The portrayal of Jesus Christ, standing with open arms, looks out over the city of Rio Dijanero from atop Corcovado mountain. The statue is made of reinforced concrete with outer layers of soapstone.
