Local currency is the Euro, although the islands are outside the European Union customs territory. Goods purchased there are not subject to Spanish customs, excise duties and Value Added Tax, making many items cheaper in the Canaries than in continental Europe.*
Also, remember to bring adaptors for European electric outlets if you like to travel with an electric razor, hair dryer, curling iron or other corded device.
Each island has an airport, but most North American flights land in Madrid and connect over. Travellers can also take a weekly ferry from Cádiz in southern Spain.
Average temperatures range from 14-21°C in January to 21-26°C in July. Very walkable, the Canary Islands are an excellent warm weather destination with a slower pace. Or if you like a vigorous hike, mountain terrain with higher altitudes are within easy distance.
Thanks to Donna MacFarlane & Bob Petersen for requesting this Canary Islands profile.
