Victoria premiere to raise funds for Team Aviawest Junior Development, South Island Mountain Bike Society

Victoria, BC, December, 16 2010 – Parkside Victoria Resort & Spa is premiering one of the most anticipated mountain bike films ever created: Stance Film's Life Cycles, on January 8, 2011.

The British Columbia-based filmmakers tell a spectacular story of the bike, from its creation to its eventual demise. A visually stunning journey with thought-provoking narration, Life Cycles uses Ultra HD to document the many stories surrounding the mountain bike and its culture. It is being premiered across the globe in front of cycling enthusiasts and followers of innovative filmmaking alike.

Some of the world's top freeriders guide viewers through the film, including Brandon Semenuk, Mike Hopkins, Evan Schwartz, Riley McIntosh, Cam McCaul, Graham Agassiz, Matt Hunter and Thomas Vanderham.

Due to the film's enhanced visuals, it is only being premiered at select venues with full HD capacity. Considered a unique premiere venue, Parkside's HD theatre was chosen for its 132-inch screen, impressive surround sound and HD capabilities, as well as its comfortable atmosphere and plush oversized seating.

“No one has done a premiere at such a venue,” said Life Cycles tour manager Alynn Smith. “I am sure it could be made into something pretty cool.”

Parkside is hosting four showings throughout the day: 12:45pm, 2pm, 3:15pm and 4:30pm. Tickets cost $10 and are available at Trek Bicycle Store, Oak Bay Bicycles WestShore/Victoria and Parkside front desk. All proceeds are going to Team Aviawest's Junior Development Team and the South Island Mountain Bike Society (SIMBS).

Aviawest Resort Group, which owns and manages six properties in British Columbia including Parkside, has been a big supporter of Victoria's cycling scene for more than a decade. CEO Jim Pearson helped found both the Aviawest Cycling Club and the Aviawest Cycling Society, a not-for-profit organization supporting young cyclists.

“Over the past five years, thanks to the involvement of Aviawest, we have seen numerous riders start cycling with us, get into racing and then go on to win Provincial and National Championships,” said Junior Development Team head coach Steve Lund.

“If it was not for Jim's support I know these riders would not be where they are today as they have all been provided with many more training and racing opportunities thanks to Aviawest.”

Parkside is the first resort-hotel in Canada built to LEED® Platinum Certification Standards.

Oceanside residents with an environmental conscience don’t have to spend their holidays sitting in a tent, chewing on granola anymore.

Instead, they can relax in luxury and enjoy the finest of everything while knowing they’re having at most a minimal impact on the environment.

Minimizing that ecological footprint starts with leaving the car at home. For our green weekend in Victoria, we opted to take the train from Parksville to downtown as a greener alternative, as steel wheels have far less drag than rubber tires and are thus far more efficient per passenger than a car. As well, modern trains emit as much as 90 per cent less carbon dioxide than airplanes traveling the same distance.

The southbound VIA Rail train leaves the Parksville station at 2:33 p.m. and offers comfortable seats and different views from those experienced on the highway, stopping briefly on both sky-high trestles in order to let passengers enjoy the view. The conductors are friendly and helpful and while there is no food service on the train, this allows passengers to use their imagination as far as packing along an environmentally friendly picnic.

Upon arrival in downtown Victoria, the conductor was more than willing to call a cab, but we opted to take advantage of a break in the weather and walk the six or so blocks to our destination.

That destination, the Parkside Victoria Resort and Spa, has been named Canada’s greenest resort hotel — and for good reason.

The facility, located in the heart of downtown Victoria, utilizes many state-of-the-art techniques and technologies that resulted in it garnering LEED Platinum certification for its sustainability in building design, development, construction, operations and maintenance.

These include a dedicated underground area that has been allocated for the collection and storage of recyclable materials collected in the suites. During the facility’s construction, 92.3 per cent of waste and materials were diverted from landfills.

As well, the facility uses a 68,500-gallon storm water tank collection system for non-potable irrigation purposes throughout the resort, with a minimum of 80 per cent of total suspended solids removed.

The swimming pool and hot tubs are ozonated, eliminating 90 per cent of the chlorine required to keep them clean.

Each suite has Energy Star rated appliances, along with energy-efficient electronics.

Because it is located right downtown, cars are not necessary to get around, but the resort has plug-ins for electric vehicles, as well as bicycle racks for more energetic guests.

Water-efficient gardening and landscaping and the use of drought-resistant plants eliminate the need to use potable water for irrigation. Many of those plants were rescued from the now-demolished Crystal Gardens.

Meanwhile, indoor air quality is maintained with flow-through natural air conditioning, meaning a huge savings on the building’s energy consumption.

Owner Andrew Pearson conceded the many environmentally friendly features of the resort made for a higher construction cost and longer build time, but stressed these added costs are already being eaten up by savings.

He said building his family’s latest resort — they also own Pacific Shores, among others in the Aviawest Resort Group — made both economic and environmental sense.

“First, it was just the right thing to do,” he said. “Everyone is getting more concerned about the future of the world and if we leave a smaller carbon footprint, the hotel is more sustainable.”

This concern can also be looked upon as a market, however.

“It’s becoming more recognized by he public and it’s good value for the owners to have their energy costs reduced, so it makes good financial sense.”

That's what British Columbia developer Andrew Pearson and his partners learned when they transformed six hectares of oceanfront property on Vancouver Island from a campground and trailer park into an upscale vacation resort.

Today the company Pearson and his wife Susan founded 20 years ago is selling a new phase of vacation homes based on fractional ownership.

Two decades ago, the Pearsons tried fractionals to lukewarm response, so they concentrated on time shares.

Now their original mode of vacation ownership is back in the market and going strong at Pacific Shores Resort and Spa.

Whole ownership was the intention in 1990 when Pacific Shores Resort was launched at its location overlooking Craig Bay, just south of Parksville. But time-sharing was more popular, so Pearson and his wife started it in 1991.

The couple also floated the idea of fractional ownership, launching a one-10th interest in fee simple deeded real estate.

All 50 shares sold quickly, and many of those original owners still spend five weeks a year at Pacific Shores.

Time-sharing remained the buzzword for several years, and Pacific Shores allied with Resort Condominiums International, becoming one of many RCI resorts around the globe.

In 2004 the Pearsons reentered the fractional real estate business. They built Parkside Victoria Resort and Spa -- a development of 126 vacation homes marketed as quarter interests -- in downtown Victoria.

A year later the concept spread to Pacific Shores & Spa when plans were announced for two-bedroom, two-bathroom units to be sold as fractional units.

Completed 21/2 years ago, the four-storey building is about 65-per-cent sold.

Amenities include underground parking and two full tennis courts.

Buyers can opt for one-eighth ownership, costing $95,900 to $123,900, giving them six weeks' occupancy during the year with two weeks guaranteed between June and September.

For quarter-owners, the price ranges from $193,900 to $234,900 for 12 weeks through the year with four weeks in high season.

Warren Smith, vice-president sales Vancouver Island for Aviawest Resort Group, the multi-destination vacation club the Pearsons founded in 2002, says owners can stay for part of their time, rent out the rest -- or stay or rent their complete slot.

"They can come here, generate income and do other things," he says.

The design of the units allows various owner use and rental options. The 32 fully finished units are also lock-off units.

Owners could stay in one side, perhaps the larger side with full kitchen complete with stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, large master bedroom with sitting area, luxurious ensuite and access to the balcony to enjoy the oceanfront view.

The other side has finishings just as elegant, and as well a fireplace, couches that fold out to sleep four. There is no kitchen, but each has a small fridge, toaster, dishes and utensils.

Victoria, BC – In the wake of the incredible success of its very first art event held in November 2009, Parkside Victoria Resort & Spa, downtown Victoria's newest $60 million resort hotel built to LEED® Platinum Certification standards, is announcing a follow-up art showing. Parkside Paints the Summer is an evening of local art, wine and cheese.

The exhibition features paintings by Erica Messing, Craig Bauer and mixed media representations by Coral Clay that explore their own observations and encounters with Victoria, the West Coast and the world around them.

Both Erica and Craig will be showing their art at one of Victoria's premiere art events, the Moss Street Paint- In earlier in the day.

Hosted by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and sponsored by TD Canada Trust, the Paint-In is an impressive outdoor art show that spans the length of Moss Street from Fort Street to Dallas Road and attracts crowds of up to 40,000 people over the course of the event.

Once art lovers have taken in the festivities on Moss Street, they are invited to attend an evening of delicious locally-sourced appetizers and wine while enjoying stunning creations by Erica, Craig and Coral and having the opportunity to meet these talented artists.

About the Artists

Erica Messing

Erica made her way west from Winnipeg to Victoria about 10 years ago to complete her education in nutrition. She is a self-taught artist who has been painting since 2006.

Erica works in acrylics, which she loves for their unique properties that allow her to paint the depth and the light that suffuses her local land and city scapes.

Craig Bauer

Born in Kelowna, Craig now resides near Victoria on Vancouver Island. He spent four years at Alberta College of Art in Calgary, where he studied Visual Communications and Painting.

Craig is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Craig’s style is graphic derivatives within the landscapes of the west coast - simplifications of organic shapes and colours creating drama and energy.

Originally born in London, Ontario and now residing in Victoria, Coral continues to be compelled and challenged by the process of transforming paint and other materials onto canvas.

Over the years, Coral's artistic journey has led her from painting ceramics and small scale canvas to, most recently, the experimental process of using mixed media - allowing her to feel more like a sculptor than a painter.

Rather than produce specific images in her work, Coral uses texture, layers and colors to draw viewers closer. For example, roof tar and sand paper along with rope and netting are used to make a physical connection to her work through touch.

Parkside's grand opening kicked off with a champagne sabreing by Pacific Shores Resort & Spa's Director of Food & Beverage and Sommelier, Atilla Cimsit. Following the sabreing, guests and visitors sampled wine and appetizers from local exhibitors including The Landing West Coast Grill, Truffles Catering and Caffe Fantastico.

The Rockland lobby featured the Green Zone highlighting local eco-conscious businesses such as reFUSE and Ecoeverything. The atrium held a live band and provided a meeting point for green building tours throughout the day.
